The Diary OF Jeremiah Bumstead Of Boston
1722-1727

Extracted & Contributed by Descendant Angela Deane

In Volume 15, 1861, The New England Historical & Genealogical Register printed Jeremiah's diary, an interesting chronicle of people and events that he observed. You'll find familiar names such as Franklin, Sewall, Mather and scores of other citizens both famous and humble.

We greatly appreciate this effort by Angela Deane. According to her the family origins are briefly as follows. Jeremiah was the son of Jeremiah and Sarah Blanchard, he born Boston, Oct 14, 1678. The original emigrant was Thomas Bumstead (Brazier or Pewterer) of Suffolk Co. England  "came to this land in the fifth month of the yeare 1640 bringing with him 2 small sons Thomas and Jeremiah and his wife Susanna." Thomas' second son, Jeremiah was twice married, first to Anna Odlin and 2nd to Sarah Blanchard. Jeremiah and Sarah's third child Jeremiah wrote the diary. This Jeremiah had 4 wives; "Quite a rascal."  Married first Sarah Abrahams, 2nd Elizabeth Bridges, 3rd Bethia Wharton Sherrar and 4th Phebe Satterly Heath. The "Bumstead Family" was compiled by Hazel P. Brook and can be found in the files of the NEHGS of Boston.
